Project description

At HealthTrust, I collaborated with other senior UX consultants to in the transformative initiative to modernize the Member Experience Portal. It is a critical platform that healthcare providers rely on for bulk medical supply procurement. As a UX Architect, I drove both systematic improvements of the design system and user experience enhancements that fundamentally changed how healthcare facilities interact with their supply chain.

It is a critical platform that healthcare providers rely on for bulk medical supply procurement. As a UX Architect, I drove both systematic improvements of the design system and user experience enhancements that fundamentally changed how healthcare facilities interact with their supply chain.

Major pain points to solve

Multiple conflicting challenges required solutions in order to move forward:

  • Legacy systems creating inefficient workarounds.

  • Inconsistent user experience across the platform.

  • Incomplete design system hampering development efficiency.

  • Outdated processing systems affecting performance.

  • Marketing-heavy language creating barriers to task completion.

Now let's look at this design system 👀

Assuming the position of a UX Architect for this project, I spearheaded a comprehensive design system evaluation to determine the following enhancements:

  1. Implemented Figma Variables for systematic color and spacing standards.

  2. Enhanced component override capabilities for greater flexibility.

  3. Developed new components based on cross-team requirements.

  4. Built a scalable foundation for future development.

How can we apply it into our everyday work?

Even though the fine-tuning of the design system was an ongoing process, I had the opportunity to work closely with two product teams on specific segments of the Member Experience Portal. The aim was to create user-centric flows, transitioning from an outdated system towards a more advanced setup. I led the transformation across these key platform areas:

  • Homepage Reimagining: Transformed marketing-heavy content into a user-centric interface focused on critical tasks like contract viewing and analytics.

  • Contract Repositories: Developed sophisticated search and filtering systems for complex vendor contracts.

  • Portfolio Management: Created systems for managing diverse medical service contracts ranging from supplies to software support.

Ordering interface that users would interact with everyday. Implementation of components assisted in correcting redundant flows to enhance the user's journey in ordering in mass for hospitals across the country.

With so many different kinds of products, having an index with organized links for different industries and offerings is crucial for accuracy when ordering.

Now let's go apply it everywhere!

By completing all the work so far, it facilitated inter-team design discussions weekly to grow in our understanding of the whole product/offering ecosystem. This also created feedback loops with development teams, built consensus across multiple stakeholders, ensured technical feasibility while maintaining design integrity and supported four product teams in capability enhancement for every line of code.

After project reflection

According to a 2023 Member Satisfaction report "72% of respondents are satisfied or extremely satisfied with the 2022 improvements that were made to the member portal" and "An average 87% of respondents are satisfied with the overall direction and leadership provided by the executive team". So overall, with the changes we made in these instances of the product, favorable reviews from users were profound and helpful to know for us as a team that we were heading in the right direction. This couldn't have been done without the team and I was very proud of what we accomplished!
